We returned to LNB Towbars (Filton, Bristol) on Tuesday to have the Dunlop air suspension system they fitted last year removed, and replaced by AS Air Suspension. There had been a leak in the Dunlop system that had proved to be elusive. Leigh Bryant, of LNB, recommended stripping out the Dunlop system and replacing it with the AS system – under warranty, of course. So far, so good.
While at LNB I noticed that they appeared to supply trailers in addition to their other goodies. I asked Leigh about this and in the course of our conversation, that followed the usual pros and cons of trailers Vs A-Frames, he told me that he had registered his TowMaster II as a trailer which took away any argument when used on the continent, eg, in Spain. He told me that many of his customers had also followed this route.
Naturally, I was keen to learn more. Leigh directed me to the DVLA website where the registration may be done on-line.
As soon as I returned home I found the appropriate page (https://www.gov.uk/register-trailer-to-take-abroad) and worked my way through it. There is a point where the DVLA states that it is not necessary to register a trailer under 3500kg but there is the option to continue anyway. There is a drop-down list of trailer manufacturers, which is not exhaustive, and the opportunity to put the name of your trailer in. I typed in “Smart”. You also need the vehicle’s VIN number, gross weight and kerb weight – all printed out on the vehicle’s V5C document. The fee for registering a trailer is £26.00.
After I completed the form and paid the fee, I was sent a “Confirmation of Trailer Registration” document showing all the appropriate details, and a “Trailer Number Plate Authorisation Certificate” to present to Halfords, or other supplier of choice, to have a number plate made up. Trailer number plates are square(ish) and coloured white. The plate should be displayed at the rear of the towed car (eg, in the back window) in addition to the towing vehicle’s (yellow) number plate.
My trailer plate should be delivered in the next day or two.
