I have made arrangements for all Hobby members, including Friends of Hobbyists, to attend a factory visit and tour in Germany. The tour will be conducted in English.
The date has been provisionally set as April 2017 but so as to avoid any Bank Holiday ferry journey or factory holidays, the exact date will be confirmed here in the next two weeks.
Anyone interested in joining me on this visit, please let your intention be known here by posting below.
I will need to know exact numbers by Saturday 3rd September 2016.

I have made a 35 minutes video of the Hobby Visit and the German Rally on my Mac computer. Unfortunately it is not possible to use Toast or iDVD anymore to cut DVDs using the new Sierra System. So if anyone wants a copy, could they bring a Memory Stick to the AGM at Ambleside and I will download the video on to it for them.

Just to echo the previous remarks, had a great time at the Hobby event and thanks to Rex and Doris. We are now sunning ourselves on the banks of the Mosel on our way to the Brittany coast. Catch up at Stoneleigh.

Françoise and I arrived home this afternoon after an extra week spent in Copenhagen. Can recommend Copenhagen as a place to visit. We echo the sentiments expressed above and heartily thank Rex and Doris for the sterling work they put in to make the visit to Germany so special. We thoroughly enjoyed all the events. Hobby put on a tremendous show and treated us so well.
We are now looking forward to meeting up with Hobby friends at the AGM. In the meantime I will be devoting a fair chunk of time to organising the pictures I took while away.

Thank you one and all for making our visit to Germany such a lovely time. Thank you Rex for organising it and a thank you Hobby for laying on for us such a super event. On behalf of John & Chrissie (my bro & sis-in-law) I would like to say a special thank you for making them so welcome despite the fact that “Red Rory” is not a Hobby. I know they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and now count you all as firm friends, as do I.

Just want to add our thanks to all involved in the planning and execution of this event. Being newbies didn’t know what to expect, but had so much fun. Thank you to everyone for the hectic and amazing “social” life. My liver may take a while to recover!!!! We are still in Germany, spent 3 days on the freezing and very wet Baltic coast we are now sitting in sunshine in a little place called Werlte just before the Dutch border. Holland tomorrow.
Thank you all.

Home now. What a good do it was. Big thanks to Rex for organising it, Doris as his second in command and translator, everyone at Hobby who was involved, oh, and the other attendees as well – a great bunch.
When’s the next one? !!

Just arrived at Folkestone on Euro Tunnel, thank you to all involved in arranging it, to the rest of you for making our stay enjoyable with lots of laughs, and an extra special for the man who whilst queueing at passport control decided not to use his handbrake and rolled back into us, not once but twice. – luckily Heidi is a tough old bird ☺

Good to hear from you Maureen and Steve. We have been thinking of you and wishing we could be there but would not have been possible. Kenn is now fully recovered but my shoulder is going to be a longer job I feel. Its still very sore even after 7 weeks but hopefully it will gradually recover and be much improved by the time June comes around. Will look forward to seeing the photos of Germany and hearing all about it. Give our regards to all who know us and have a safe journey home when the time arrives.

All good in Germany, Sue and Kenn. The factory tour was fascinating, followed the same day with a very nice meal…thank you Hobby. We are now in the camp site club room……all very animated here….read that as noisy. Missing you but glad to hear that the patients are making progress. Rick has taken dozens of photos, in which it looks quite warm, in fact it is on the chilly side but the weather is due to improve. Missed Angela, hope she was given a Hobby goody bag (as we all were) see you in Ambleside.

Hi does anyone have the co-ordinates for the campsite as our sat Nav does not recognise the ones we have.

Woo hoo we are currently in a gym car park next to another Hobby but it has foreign plates so not one of our group. Only 200 kms away in Osnabruck. Can’t decide whether to head straight for camp site tomorrow or, just do 100km and take a slow poodle on Monday. ☺

Hi, we have a slight problem, when we planned our route we were not aware of the need of an environmental pass, sat Nav has just informed us we are going through one with no detour available, is there any way of getting a pass?

Tofts update……our daughter is now back in her Briatol home having had nine intravenous bags of antibiotic, with just a course of AB tablets to take. She has been warned it may return….whatever it was, they aren’t sure. So we are off to Delft as planned and will decide if we go on into Germany after Delft. Looking forward to meeting some of you in Delft. We will look for Hobby vans. Now lots of last minute packing to do as we need to be out of our driveway by 9 am tomorrow to catch our Tunnel train.

Sadly there is now a possibility that we won’t be able to make Germany. Our daughter has been on an acute hospital ward for three days with a deep tissue infection that is currently not responding to treatment. We have no idea when she will be well enough to be discharged and she may have to recover with us for a while before she goes back to her house in Bristol. I will let you know one way or the other when things become clearer but felt we should give you advance warning. At the moment it appears that she is in for a long haul.

Here is the reply from Rex and Joan to my question about clothing and whether there is a list of events:
“At the moment as for clothing the choice is yours there is no formal agenda. We will be doing the factory visit on Thursday morning and out for the meal in the evening. Nothing planned for Friday or Saturday so it’s do your own thing. Sunday we will all be joining in the festivities at the factory celebrations hope this answers your query.”
April 10, 2017 at 9:12 am #3474
Glad you asked this question Francoise as we were discussing the same thing last night.
Hope an answer comes through quickly as we are setting off this afternoon – otherwise, we can blame our sartorial inappropriateness on ignorance!
Have a good journey everyone.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 26 April.
Jean and Mike.
April 10, 2017 at 7:18 am #3473
Just a question about the German trip. Is there any need to bring more “formal” clothing for any events that might require it?
Also is there some sort of list of events?

I realise that we have spoken on the phone since you posted the above question but as a reminder to others I have pasted an extract below, from an email that I sent on 28th January 2017 to those members only, proposing to travel to Germany.
The chosen site is See Campingplatz BUM, Borgdorf, Germany, Postcode 24589 (typing Germany 24589 into Google will bring up a location map with the option to create a route)
The website is http://www.seecampingbum.de
As always, please do not make contact with the site directly, all communication and questions should be directed to our forum.

We are aiming to plan the route this weekend so will let know it as soon as we do, having said that we plan to cross via the Tunnel on Friday 21st April at 08:50, we shall obviously be using stopovers along the way. We are aiming to get to the campsite on Monday 24th (all things going well), we shall be leaving the campsite on Monday 1st May as returning via the Tunnel on Thursday 4th May.
Just need to do an auto route to the campsite this weekend.

JUST A PRECAUTION
As a result of an accident at home a couple of weeks ago, where a heavy flat board dropped squarley on my head, I am now suffering from what is suspected as a compressed fracture of my spine.
Against better advice I chose to drive to the south of France, which had the effect of worsening my condition.
The purpose of this post is to prewarn you that if my condition does not improve then I shall not be attempting the journey to Germany.
Hopefully, I will feel better over the next few weeks. That being the case I will see you there as planned.
February 17, 2017 at 3:38 pm #3430
Finally sorted out our dates.
We will arrive at the campsite on Wednesday 26 April and leave on Monday 1 May.
Ferry etc not booked yet but we will probably be crossing the channel via Dunkirk. Staying at places on the way, then after the factory visit going to Copenhagen.
Looking forward to it all.

Any further information that has previously been circulated by email to those travelling, will be automatically forwarded to you.
I appreciate that some members are cautious about posting precise travel arrangements here, that will not be necessary.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year – ours was pretty quiet as Kenn had his HIP OP on the 12th December
Re Germany we have decided that we should regrettably opt out on medical grounds. Although Kenn’s hip seems to be progressing well – it’s Sue’s turn next under the knife for shoulder surgery and she was told yesterday that it will be some time in March. So no chance of recovery before the German experience.
We wish everyone a great trip and look forward to catching up later in the year

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ALL THOSE WISHING TO TRAVEL TO GERMANY.
We are currently negotiating discounted camping fees with the preferred campsite ‘seecampingbum’.
Whilst I appreciate that there is no such thing !! this is the nearest to a ‘one size fits all’ site, neither expensive nor cheap with the option of paying for your particular tipple, be it golfing, swimming etc. It is the most suitable that we could find in the area but as explained previously, this will involve the use of a coach company to transport us to and from the various Hobby functions. As a reminder, the estimated coach costs which have been previously stated, are based on all members making use of the 50 seater coach on each occasion.
Accordingly, I am requesting a non-refundable deposit of £100 per van to secure both your camping pitch and seat(s) on the coach transport.
Can you please ensure that your payment, in the form of a cheque, made payable to Independent Association of Hobbyists arrives with our treasurer by 15th January 2017.
Please post your cheque to :
Mr D Lawson
3, The Village Green,
For the benefit of members travelling with dogs to the campsite, there is an extra charge of 1.5 Euros per dog / per night.
I do not envisage that any of the planned excursions will exceed 6 hours off site which should be ok for the majority of dogs.
Finally, as always, please do not attempt to contact the campsite direct which has been known to either confuse a booking or indeed cancel a booking totally. All communication with the campsite is to be conducted by one nominated person only. If you have any questions with regard to the campsite, please post your questions here where they will be dealt with promptly.
December 9, 2016 at 3:07 pm #3374

We have been talking about the visit to the factory and have a couple of questions.
Does the campsite allow dogs and if so what is the extra cost?
Could you give an idea of how long each visit will last? We assume she will have to stay in the van but she is used to staying in there for a ferry crossing of 8 hours from Plymouth so we will have to work out if that is long enough..
Tony & Dee
November 7, 2016 at 10:23 pm #3360
Keith and I have booked our ferry to sail from Hull to Rotterdam on the 19th of April as we want to combine a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens and the bulb fields. We will be at which ever campsite is chosen by the 24th April.
November 6, 2016 at 12:21 pm #3359
Yes, we are booked on the same ferry as you. We will probably get sorted and then have a drink and a meal in the bistro, rather than the canteen – the crossing is long enough to safely do that – so if you would like to join us for both/ either of those we can make an early start on the socialising. My mobile number is 07824 511911, so we can find each other on board. Are you planning to go to the pre-Christmas fun? If so, we will see you there,
November 4, 2016 at 6:24 pm #3357
We wanted to do something before the Hobby Factory visit so we have now booked ourselves onto the Camping and Caravan Club rally at Delft Houte. We are staying four nights. There is a parade of floats that are decorated with bulb heads on Saturday 22nd and the rally organises a coach trip to see it. We are booked onto this, £12 per head. We will move on from Delft on Monday 24 th and visit Keukenhof (will be our second visit) and then stay locally to that before getting to the Hobby meet on Weds 26th. All very exciting. Currently in the van at Broadway with Steve making supper. All good then

Hi Nick & Ruth,
Ambleside Friends of Hobbyists calling Lazonby Hobbyists.

We have now booked our ferry crossing, Newcastle to Amsterdam, because we spotted that there is a special offer on at the moment. We expect to be in Rensburg on Wednesday 26th, and are happy to pay for the bus trips to the factory. Thanks again for sorting this out.
See you all there,

In answer to Peter Kirvan above.
I also intend travelling with friends from where I will be in France prior to the Factory visit. My friends will be granted the same discounted camping rates as us at the agreed site, but unfortunatley as non IAH members they will not be able to attend any of the Hobby functions.
November 1, 2016 at 4:12 pm #3348
In reply to Lin and Mike above.
I will be in a position to advise which campsite has been chosen in the next few weeks.
I will at that time confirm our agreed discounted rate for camping fees.
There is no need for individual bookings. We as a club will arrange a block booking for everyone attending.
23rd April 2017 is not a Wednesday !!
Yes you would need to be there by Wednesday 26th April 2017 but it would be possible to arrive anytime from Monday 24th when pitches will be available.
In Germany there are special permissions for road use, congestion and emmisions zones, similar to those in London. Unfortunatley I am in no posistion to advice individuals on which route to take. Your best advice would be to consult a motoring organisation such as the AA once your chosen route is selected.

I would like to invite my brother and sister-in-law to join me for the Hobby factory visit event since we shall be touring together before and after the event. They have their own motorhome (not an Hobby though). Is this possible please?
The costs for the visit sound very reasonable.
Thanks and regards,
November 1, 2016 at 11:35 am #3345
Happy enough with costs. Can you tell me which campsite has been chosen and do we have to book it ourselves? We would need to be there by the Wednesday before hand is that the 23rd April please. Also do we require any special permissions (road or otherwise) to travel in Germany? We haven’t been that way before, hence the queries.
Best wishes Lin & Mike Cousins

UPDATE REGARDING COACH TRAVEL (EXCURSIONS)
Recent requests for quotations from local coach companies suggest that each return trip from our preffered campsite to the Hobby factory in one 50 seater coach would cost 480 euros.
Currently we have 21 vans hoping to attend, 42 individuals, this equates to 11.42 euros per head per trip.
Bearing in mind that it is a return trip of 60km, I personally do not consider the cost unreasonable.
Incidentally, one stipulation the coach company have made is that any delay at either end of the journey would incur an extra charge of 40 euros per half hour, or part thereof. So best be prompt !
It is planned that we would require three seperate return jouneys.
Thurdsay evening – meal provided by Hobby
Friday daytime – Hobby factory visit
Sunday daytime – Hobby 50th anniversary celebrations
Hopefully we are all in agreement with these costs. As a reminder, it has been previously stated that the factory could not accomodate our vans.
Applications to attend this trip are still welcome but should the final number exceed 50 individuals, then we would need to request further quotations for a larger coach.

Looking forward to it,

Hello David and Marjory,
Welcome to the club and forum.
The exact dates are as specified in my post above, dated 6th July.
Nothing has changed and all plans still revolve around those dates.
If these dates are suitable, please confirm your wish to attend. And yes you can count yourselves in.
Spaces are still available and the closing date, although originally set for 3rd September, will be extended until such time that the campsite and coach travel arrangements are confirmed.

Rex, we have recently become Hobbyists, depending on exact dates we would be interested in joining if not too late to register.

We have decided to catch the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. Although a little more expensive we are only 15 minutes away and save on the fuel south and the drive up on the other side of the channel. Not to mention all the traffic holdups. I have not booked it yet, but will wait to see where others are deciding to camp and then will make my plans.
If anyone else is thinking of the same crossing, I know of a CL site which we have used before and he has now fitted hard standings. The site is even closer to the terminal than us. I will pass on the info’ to anyone who is interested.
It is our intention to stay on beyond the visit to visit other lands afar, so we can be counted in.

Hello Kit and Jessa,
For yourselves and the benefit of others, I can confirm that the arrangements and dates as previously mentioned in my earlier post are definite.
It is expected that all members will make their own way to an agreed site, to arrive between Monday 24th and Wednesday 26th April 2017.
Another member, extremely fluent in the German language is currently researching sites for our stay and has narrowed them down to two.
The favourite is currently quoting 16.50 Euros per unit night, with a possible discount for a block booking. Electricity and showers tend to be extra via a pre-payment card system. Each member will be responsible for paying their own site fees.
The favoured site is approximately 30 minutes drive from the factory. As the factory would be unable to accommodate the number of vans we are expecting to attend, the same member researching the sites is also requesting quotes from local coach companies to transport us to and from the individual functions. Obviously it is expected that any transport expenses incurred would be shared by all attending.
Once the site and transport arrangements are finalised I will post here again with firm details of costs and any deposits requested.

See from earlier posts that Sept 3 was deadline. Are the arrangements finalised yet?
We are both definitely going. April 27th is my birthday so seems like a good way to celebrate it

I have just started to do some ‘homework’ on this adventure. We will definitely be going via the Tunnel so we can cash in our Tesco tokens. It is about 530 miles from Calais to Rendsburg so we will break up the journey somewhere, likely to be around Munster. I have started to look at possible stopover sites but I really now need to get out our details Germany maps. I am sure others will travel in a different way but I am a useless sailor so the Tunnel suits us best.

The progress to date:
Having investigated all school holidays and bank holidays etc for April / May 2017, I found the earliest (read cheapest and less busy ferry travel) would be leaving UK on 25th April and staying abroad, certainly until after the May bank holiday Monday.
What’s been arranged so far with Hobby management is to arrive at campsite (to be sourced by factory) sometime between Monday 24th and Wednesday 26th April.
Hobby management have arranged an evening meal for all our members as a big thank you on Thursday 27th April.
The factory tour would be conducted on Friday 28th April, with a host speaker in broken English. It is requested that any questions from our members be in slow concise English.
Sunday 30th April is their 50th anniversary where at an all day event with many guests, our small troop are invited to take part and enjoy.
I would be interested in your thoughts with regard to extending the stay, as I did last time I visited the Hobby factory, taking in this beautiful part of northern Germany and the Baltic Coast, perhaps continuing on further afield to Denmark which is approximately 50km from the border.
